Identity Celebration Events

International Non-Binary People’s Day

14th July is International Non-Binary People’s Day which is a celebration of people who identify as non-binary.

Non-binary is a term for people who do not identify 100% as ‘male’ or ‘female’.  Some non-binary people might identify as both ‘male’ and ‘female’, and some non-binary people might not identify as ‘male’ or ‘female’. International Non-Binary People’s Day is about raising awareness that a person can describe their gender however feels comfortable for them. For example, some non-binary people might use the words ‘they/them’ to describe themselves, but other non-binary people might use ‘she/her’ or ‘he/him’.

How can you support non-binary people?

By thinking about the words you use when talking to others. For example, rather than using ‘ladies and gentlemen’ use other words such as ‘people’, ‘everyone’, or ‘folks’. This shows that you recognise that you cannot tell what someone’s gender is just by looking at them.

Respect people’s decisions to describe their gender however feels comfortable for them. For example, using the pronouns that a person asks you to use such as ‘they/them’. This shows that you respect them and who they are.
